Longest 12-hour trolley waits September 2026

These trusts recorded the most patients waiting over 12 hours between the decision to admit them and actually getting a bed. It is the figure most often quoted by MPs and campaigners because these waits happen after a clinician has already decided the patient is sick enough to stay.

About this table

The England rankings use NHS England's monthly A&E attendances and emergency admissions statistics. Trusts are ranked on the percentage of patients at their major, consultant-led (Type 1) emergency departments who were admitted, transferred or discharged within four hours, because comparing full A&Es with minor injury units flatters trusts that only run the latter. The four-hour figure in the header cards covers all attendance types, which is the basis of the NHS constitutional standard that 95% of patients should be seen within four hours. Trusts with the same percentage share a rank, and month-on-month arrows compare each trust with the previous month's published figure, including any revisions NHS England has made since.

Scotland's table comes from Public Health Scotland's monthly A&E activity statistics and Wales's from the StatsWales emergency department dataset, in each case ranking individual hospitals rather than trusts because that is how those nations publish their figures. The devolved nations publish on their own timetables, so their tables can cover a different month from England's. New figures for all three nations are imported automatically each month, which means this page always shows the latest published month without waiting for a manual update.
